Review – Hot Pursuit (2015)

The hilarious Modern Mother Sofia Vergera teams up with the pint-sized Oscar winning Reese Witherspoon for a buddy, road trip comedy, what can go wrong?

Apparently, a lot.

The project seemed to have everything going for it, what with Director Anne Fletcher, responsible for the break-out chick flick cult faves 27 Dresses and The Proposal as well as its two hugely popular leading ladies.

Reese Witherspoon stars as Rose Cooper, a police woman who’s dreamed of following in her dad’s footsteps of being a highly decorated officer ever since she was a little girl but has been relegated to the low level evidence room after an embarrassing incident. However, Cooper gets her opportunity for glory when she’s tasked with protecting the spoilt mob wife Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara), but as you can guess, dangerous hijinks ensue.

From the first frame we are bombarded by flat jokes like a round of bullets, with each one completely missing the mark. It’s no fault to the actresses themselves, who don’t have much to work with thanks to writers David Feeney and John Quintance, who are really just recycling gags from other, better, buddy cop movies and they seem to rely solely on clichés 867810_074and cringe-inducing scenes that simply don’t work (watch out for awful the lesbian seduction sequence…yes, they went there) which makes you wonder what Vergara and Witherspoon did to deserve such treatment.

The recurring gag of news reports incorrectly listing Riva’s age and Cooper’s height is one that brings the biggest and only grin, purely because they bombard us with the joke continously until we are beaten into submission. There are glimpses of hope to be found with in the action but these soon fizzle out into obscurity by the obnoxious scenes and dialogue that follow it, eventually leading to an anti-climactic finale.

Overall, Hot Pursuit is just one big hot mess with very little substance to really justify calling it a “comedy” thanks to the poor writing and direction. However, some bright spots lay with the action sequences but the best part about the movie is that it finally ends.
